I haven't used this camera under water and wasn't planning to either, but I went for the sport instead of the Zi8 just for the occasional outdoor shooting and just in case it fell in water or something. The camera seems well built when it comes to waterproofing. Also nice large display and egonomics.
I would recommend going for more than 4GB on memory, which will give you only about 44 min of 1080 HD recording time. If you want to record small segments of your cat or your kids, then it would be fine but for recording lectures or interviews 4GB came up short unless you use the lower quality WVGA which would give you 1 hr 43 min or 1 hr 5 min on 720p.
I actually missed the end of an interview I was recording because I ran out of memory on 1080p.
I bought a 16GB card for $19.99 from CompUSA which gives me 3 hrs and 8 minutes of 1080HD recording time or 4 hrs 32 min of 720p recording time, or 7 hrs 14 min of WVGA recording time.
There is also some serious distortion if you move the camera in 1080 mode.
Also a warning to those have just gotten this camera: when you are importing files, the progress bar does not change. It just shows 0% and stays there until everything has been imported and then it gives a notice that 4 files have been imported for instance. The first time I disconnected it as I thought that nothing was happening or the system was stuck until I found out later while importing a much smaller file that it didn't change.
The editing software was also a bit disappointing as I was also looking forward to getting a simple editing software that is better than Windows Movie Maker but less complicated than Adobe Premier Pro. The ArcSoft MediaImpression software turned out to be way too simplistic. Pretty much all you can do with it is a little trimming and some simple effects and then upload it to youtube, Facebook, Vimeo or twitter. That's it.
The worst part for me though was the lack of an external audio input. So I'm exchanging it for a regular Zi8.
I also got the accessory kit. The pouch was great, remote is useful if you'll be recording yourself, 4 GB memory not enough, didn't need or use the extra battery.
