Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kodak EasyShare Z1485 14MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 inch LCD (Blue)

Customer Review: Kodak didn't get this camera right.
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a genuine review.

I did quite a bit of research before ending up with this camera from B&h. I have had this camera for about 2 weeks now and tried most of what the camera can offer. This camera is ready to make its journey back to the dealer.

Pros:

1. Very portable.
2. Takes AA batteries which makes it easy while travelling.
3. Picture quality is generally good. Pictures in bright sunlight turns out really good. The other cameras that I tried before produces darker subjects when shot against a bright background.
4. Smart Capture does ok and the camera comes with about 16 or so preset modes.

Cons:

1. The camera feels very delicate in your hand. At times, I was worried of scratching it while in my pocket or breaking the battery compartment accediently.

2. The lens wobbles. The two sections of the lens touches each other when the camera is on and if you were to tilt it.

3. Battery life is just not acceptable. I tried with 6 different kinds of batteries both lithium and NIMH high capacity batteries. They all died after taking just 10- 15 pictures. The same set of batteries lasts a long long time in my canon S2is.

4. Lag between shots is not acceptable as well. Both in smart mode and any scene mode the camera takes a good 6 to 7 seconds between shots. So you cannot go clicking snaps and this is very very irritating.

5. If the battery dies, the camera gets stuck with the lens in the open position. This almost got me big time and luckly I had a set of charged batteries.

6. The camera failed to read my new kingston 8gb card couple of times and I had to power it down and turn it on again to make it read the card again. All along it kept saying " Unable to read the card. Please replace your memory card". I got this card brand new from fry's an hour ago.

7. The software that comes with the camera is a piece of junk. It doesn't let you store the pictures in a custom folder of your choice. It dumps them in the documents and setting/.../ folder.

If you can put with up with its extremely high battery consumption and if you can put up with its 5-6 seconds time between snaps and if you can take a chance with its delicate construction and unreliable hardware then go for it.

I highly recommend to look at alternatives and don't let the 14mp "buzz word" trip you. We hardly need more than 6mp for regular photography and regular prints (unless you want to blow them up to super huge prints which is very unlikely for 95% of the users)

Update 08/02/2009

I ended up buying a panasonic DMC-LZ8k(Black) for lot less (Paid 99$) than Z1485 and I'm really happy with it's performance. I used the same set of batteries that I used with the Kodak z1485 and got hundreds of pictures without any problem. Lag between shots is minimal, camera feels really stong and reliable. IA mode works well in most of the situations, Low light performance is accetable, has full manual controls, bigger LCD. Have not seem any serious flaws with the camera so far.

I'm planning to give this camera to my dad and get a panasonic DMC-ZS3 as soon as the prices drop a little bit which should happen in the next month or two. Costco sells DMC-ZS1 which is one level down and is pretty good as well for 240$
