Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kodak ESP 7250 All-in-One Printer

Customer Review: Using the Kodak 7250
Summary: 4 Stars

[...] I have been interested in buying the Kodak 7250 for about 9 months, the reason is I am tired of paying exorbitant ink costs. We have been using the 7250 for about 1 month. I would reccomend following the instructions provided by the 7250 for setup in the order they are written, I did and had no problems setting the printer up. For the 7250 there are a lot of plastic packing protectors to be removed, but the 7250 setup instructions gives you step by step process to remove all packing tapes and protectors. When you place the ink cartridges in, it is a bit disconcerting cause you have to use a pretty good amount of downward force on the in cartridge such that it "snaps" into the ink cartridge carousel in the 7250. When placeing the ink cartridge the instructions indicate there will be a loud snap indicating proper seating, one of the ink cartridges produced a loud snap, the other one (can't remember which one) produced a "quiet" snap. The wireless connectivety connection was a breeze, again I would reccomend following the Kodak provided instructions. The Kodak 7250 LCD readout while establishing connectivity was informative and pretty intuitive, but you do have to know about WiFi a little bit (this comment is true for any WiFi device not just the Kodak 7250).

The one thing on the setup the 7250 did which was a bit unexpected was immediately download new firmware. This wasn't a problem and the 7250 loaded and installed the new firmware without a hitch but if you buy a 7250 make sure you have Internet connectivity availability for the printer immediately. Also (FYI) WHILE the printer is updating it's firmware it is IMPORTANT to make sure you DO NOT power down the printer, other wise you will have to send the printer back to the manufacturer to get re-flashed. For me I had no problems downloading and installing the new firmware, but I thought I would warn non-technical people and instruct them of this.

The WiFi connectivity of the printer turned out to be a real advantage, much more than I thought it would be. The main reason is that the printer can be located conviently anywhere and doesn't have to be located near the computer or/and a ethernet port. Also if you have a big print job, you can temporarily locate it to other convenient work locations such as your kitchen table where you can edit with your laptop and then print right away. Another REAL advantage of the WiFi is that the printer is setup to be a network printer, in other words you do NOT have to tie it to a computer and then have that computer slow down when someone else on the network is printing on the printer.

The printing is a bit subdued but acceptable, this comment applies to normal paper, I have heard that if you use Kodak paper the printing is excellent. In the future I probably will goto Kodak paper, one reason is the Kodak paper has invisible alignment marks which the 7250 can read which should mean it will automatically align the paper or/and print head.

Reviews which state the printer is loud are true. Kodak needs to reduce the noise by at least 1/2 or more. My old printer, an Epson, you could not hear it print from downstairs the Kodak 7250 you definitely can hear it from downstairs. I do not know if the noise is generated from the print head or/and the paper handler but it is noisy. I would say though that the increased noise level of the 7250 is tolerable, it was just unexpected and noticeable and compared to other printers is on the loud side. One advantage of the noise is you know your print job is printing and when it is done, which is relatively quick. It is because of the loudness of the 7250 that I didn't give the 7250 a perfect score, I took one star away. The loudness is tolerable and IMO should NOT deter anyone from buying or recommending the 7250, it is though on the high side compared to other printers.

A REAL ADVANTAGE of buying the Kodak 7250 over the 5250 is the auto-duplexer and is the main reason I bought the 7250 versus the 5250. The auto-duplexer allows the 7250 to automatically print on both sides of the paper, in other words if you print on both sides of the paper your paper cost are 1/2 versus a printer which doesn't print on both sides, this is one reason I figure I can afford to buy real Kodak paper in the future. I don't understand why Kodak and other reviews do not highlight this feature, it is a cost saving as well as a very nice feature. To print on both sides, when the printer window comes up you have to goto Preferences, then select Layout tab and then on the Layout page within the "Two Sided" box select "Automatically with Duplexer". The 7250 will then automatically print on both sides of the paper, even here you can see that the 2 sided printing capability is buried (you have to hunt for it), not only this but few people will know to select "Automatically with Duplexer" function when they want two-sided printing. I am here to say that the Kodak ESP 7250 DEFINITELY does automatic two-sided printing.

The bottom line I would reccomend buying the Kodak ESP 7250 printer, overall it's low operation cost (low ink cost & double sided printing), feature set and ease of operation makes it one of the best if not the best overall choise on the market. Also if you want excellent color you can use Kodak paper (though admittedly I haven't tried it I am relying on other reviews), the noise though is a bit excessive but I would say tolerable (still I would encourage Kodak to reduce the noise on future models)

The 7250 contines to drop the Wifi connection, it will maintain connection for about 8 hours then drop the connection. The ONLY way I can get it to reconnect is to power cycle the printer and the wireless router at the same time. I am pretty sure this is a firmware problem with how Kodak maintains Wifi connection or how they recconnect after a Wifi connection drop. We have 3 laptops in the house they all connect, reconnect and maintain Wifi connection with our DLink wireless router. I have web chatted with Kodak support and she told me it was a KODAK AiO Software problem and that I need the latest version, however I found out I have the latest version 5.4.6.4 (she stated this application would download the latest firmware). Not sure what to do, turning on/off the printer every day to print is a pain. BTW I have tried power cycling the printer by itself, turning off/on the Wifi and reentering my WPA2 key, NONE of this works. The ONLY thing that works is power cycling the printer at the same time I power cycle the wireless router, strong indication that the printer Wifi firmware needs to be corrected. If Kodak fixes this problem (and they should be able to, they just need to consult with someone who actually knows Wifi) this printer would be awesome. As is it is a headache, Kodak needs a Wifi communication expert. This problem IS NOT a user problem.

Ok, I think I have solved the Wifi problem. I had my Dlink on 20/40MHz, not only did this cause problems with linking and maintaining linking to the Kodak 7250 but it also caused my son's MACBOOKPRO to have problems to connect the our Wifi. Changing the Dlink Channel BW to just 20MHz seems to have solved the Wifi problem, the printer now connects and maintains connection thus far.

The 2nd thing is DO NOT Update the firmware if you are connected by Wifi, ONLY update the Kodak 7250 firmware if you are connected by USB. This seems to address people who's printer was working fine but were Wifi connected and then updated the firmware. If the link should get dirupted your 7250 may lose it's brains. BEFORE updating ANY firmware make sure you have the printer connected to a WIRED interconnect to the Internet, again DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE of the 7250 by Wifi, this could cause problems. BTW Kodak Aio Home Center told me to update the printer firmware today, I did this while the printer was connected by Wifi. I thought the firmware update was garbaged up cause the printer stayed on and I couldn't turn it off by the power button. So I unplugged the printer and then I read the Help section in Kodak Aio Home Center, the firmware update SPECIFICALLY tells you NOT to update the firmware through Wifi, it specifically tells you to ONLY do a firmware update through USB connection to internet (a wire connection). You would think that Kodak AIO Home Center would check to see if the printer is connected by Wifi before allowing a firmware update. Long story short appears I was lucky and the printer downloaded the firmware update through my Wifi connection, but I will not update the firmware through Wifi again, this is playing Russian Roulette with your printers brains.

Some other Wifi suggested settings:
1. Have DHCP enabled.
2. Have Wifi b,g and n enabled
3. Enable Auto Channel Scan
4. Make sure you have plenty of DHCP address range, I allow 100 IP addresses to be defined.
5. Fix the IP address for the printer on the router, as well as other often connected computers.

Looks like the Kodak 7250 is a fine printer. I will post if I start having Wifi connection problems, but I am pretty sure they are solved.

Avoid using 20/40MHz setting, this seems to be problematic for some devices trying to connect to a Wifi router, note a 40MHz channel automatically reduces the number of available channels by 1/2, which is not good.

Just got an email from Kodak support, to their credit they essentially admitted they had a Wifi problem, to correct this they released new firmware to make the Wifi connection more stable, below is a copy from Kodak's website with the revision which was released to make the Wifi connection more stable:

Doing a Google search on:

KODAK ESP 7250 All-in-One Printer Firmware

will bring up the web URL with the firmware update for Windows.

1/23/2011:
There seems to be secondary connection issues, like the Kodak driver on the PC not recognizing the printer if it changes IP address (reboot of router). To overcome this reserve (fix) the IP address the router gives the Kodak 7250. In general fixing the IP address (reserving it) seems to help the LAN side of the connection to have less problems as well as recognition of other computers is quicker.

There seems to be a bug in the latest version of firmware IF you do a maintenance printing while the printer is in deep sleep mode, maintenance printing will lock up the printer if done from deep sleep mode. Kodak maintenance printing is accessed by clicking open the Kodak printer in the system tray, clicking on the wrench at the top of the window, and then clicking "Print Test Page". Do NOT click on "Print Test Page" if the printer is in deep sleep mode. If the printer is in wake-up mode it prints the maintenance page OK. Also FYI the printer prints normal print job requests (non-maintenance printing) OK from deep sleep, there is no issue with "normal" print requests.
