Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kodak 50121 Double Layer DVD+R DLCustomer Review: Fun to play with but questionable quality burns, label heft may affect motor life and burnability Summary: 3 Stars
(consider this review a work in progress, investigating DVD burner behavior)
I've held off picking up dual layer DVD's since I bought my first burner in '05, making do with singles and almost always Japanese discs at that (Taiyo Yuden) as I am a stickler for quality burns. I burn singles at 8X even though they are rated for twice that because the error rates don't lie. A couple of minutes per burn are worth the beautiful scans and longevity of my data.
That said, these Kodak brand discs show up as of this writing as RICOHJPN D01 made in India. There are many discussions around the internet so I will not repeat them here. I use two DVD burners: A Pioneer DVR-212D and a BenQ DW1655. The latter of which is very good at scanning which is why I keep it around even though the Pioneer burns with a bit more quality. My first burn went at 4X in the Pio without a hitch but the BenQ was going nuts on the quality scan. Error spikes with a larger tidal wave around the layer changeover. So I marked that down as a possible coaster but the transfer rate test was okay with only a dip just before the changeover. Second burn at 2.4X in the Pio again went fine and the scan was marginally better in the BenQ but still with the huge spike at the changeover and a similar looking transfer rate curve. Burn #3 was in the BenQ at 2.4X and the dang thing cancels the burn at the layer changeover. Even though I cannot scan errors with the Pio, its transfer rate curve is flawless so this may just be a case of the BenQ hating these things. I've yet to try the burns in other drives and I am anxious to read the discs in a few months to track the deterioration.
Overall I guess the rule of thumb that if you want quality DL, stick to Verbatim still applies but the price on these is so enticing. You get what you pay for, eh? Caveat emptor as always.
Update: tried to read a burn (the most "successful" one so far) in a notebook's reader. Not only did it not recognize the disc, the drive emitted a grinding sound I've never heard before. Not only do these discs present iffy quality burns but they may actually wear out your drives motor more quickly! Definitely something to keep in mind! The aesthetic of the label is also one of the worst I've ever seen but luckily I only care about functionality.
